The History of Mainzer Cats Postcards
The History of Mainzer Cats Postcards

Mainzer Cats postcards are well-loved by collectors and cat lovers. These colourful, humorous illustrations capture mischievous cats in lively scenes, often causing chaos in human-like settings. But where did they come from, and why are they so popular?

The Artist Behind the Cats

The famous Mainzer Cats were created by Eugen Hartung (1897–1973), a Swiss artist known for his playful and detailed illustrations. His cat designs were originally published by the German postcard company Alfred Mainzer, which is how they got their name.

Hartung’s work wasn’t limited to cats, he also illustrated fairy tales and children’s books, but it was his cat postcards that gained the most recognition. His unique style brought feline antics to life, portraying cats engaged in everyday activities, from shopping and dining to playing music and getting into trouble. Each scene is packed with detail and humour, making them endlessly enjoyable to look at.

Alfred Mainzer and the Postcards

Alfred Mainzer Inc. was a publishing company based in New York, founded in the 1920s. It became known for its high-quality lithographic postcards, with the Mainzer Cats series being one of its standout products. The postcards were originally printed in Switzerland and later in Belgium, using the vibrant colour printing techniques of the time.

During the height of their popularity in the mid-20th century, these postcards were widely distributed in shops and by mail order. They became a hit not just in the United States but across Europe, thanks to their charming and humorous appeal.

What Makes Mainzer Cats Special?

One of the reasons these postcards remain so popular is their timeless humour. The cats are often dressed in clothes and placed in amusing scenarios that reflect human behaviour, making them both endearing and relatable. Their expressions and body language are exaggerated, adding to the comedy.

Collectors also appreciate the fine details in Hartung’s illustrations. Whether it’s a cat struggling with a fishing net or a group of kittens creating havoc in a kitchen, every scene is full of energy and storytelling.

Collecting Mainzer Cats Postcards

Today, Mainzer Cats postcards are sought after by collectors. Older, vintage prints tend to be more valuable, especially those in good condition. Some collectors focus on specific themes, such as musical cats or market scenes, while others try to complete a full set of designs.

Reprints are still available, but for those who love the charm of original vintage postcards, finding an authentic Mainzer Cats card can be a real treat.

A Lasting Legacy

Even decades after their first release, Mainzer Cats postcards continue to bring smiles to people’s faces. Whether displayed, sent to friends, or kept as part of a collection, these charming illustrations remain a delightful piece of postcard history.
